Day 12 (Jan 1)
After a lazy breakfast at our new hotel, 35 Rooms, we continued milling about in our room for the morning. Getting our money's worth. Hehe. I think we'd probably have set off much earlier if we didn't learn from our concierge that everything would pretty much be closed today.
Whatever the case, we were determined to explore more of Beirut, whether Beirut was agreeable or not. Around lunch time, we took a taxi to Saifi village where cute boutiques are located. We tortured ourselves by looking at all the fun things we could've bought, and simultaneously consoled ourselves that at least we got to save money this way.
Walking through Gemmayzeh, we noticed that many bars hadn't yet cleared up from the festivities of the night before (maybe just hours before). As I said, Lebanese know how to party. In fact, I recall that our wait staff at Felix were partying the night away as well!
We ended up at Italian (again). This place called Margherita's, which was good. In fact, it was so good that we (embarrassingly) went back there for dinner again that night with Shanaz's friend Dani. There's this game that the staff play after dinner's over. We have to guess a number from 1 to 99 and then they draw from the straw basket. If the numbers match, we get dinner for free. I think we were both a bit miffed that we didn't strike even though we were there 2 meals in a row.
It was a bit rainy and cold all day, but we braved the elements as we retraced our steps on the Walk Beirut tour to get some day time pictures. When we got too tired, we plonked ourselves down at this restaurant called Al Falamanki for nargileh (hooka, shisha) and tea. We stayed there for almost four hours, and were served by a rather drunk wait staff who admitted that he'd partied a little too hard the night before. Ended with another quiet night as I was way tooo fatigued from the night before and then waking up ridiculously early on new year's day.
